A Geological Journey by Pictures.
..............................................................................................................
Over 200 years ago, early explorers & surveyors noticed that their compasses would go haywire when passing through a certain area in Arkansas. Not really knowing the cause, & having more important things to do, they made notes of the oddity & moved on. In the early 1800's, settlers in the area noticed the same thing, but these people had more time to figure out what was causing the phenomenon. By 1840, it had become clear that there were massive amounts of Magnetite under the area, and by 1850, it was discovered that several more minerals were also commonly found here. But in these early days, these people could not realize exactly WHAT was actually under their feet.
Right before WWII, commercial mining came to the area. Within a short time it was determined that this was a literal cornucopia of mineral varieties. To date, there have been over 100 separate species identified in "The Cove", which is an ancient eroded volcanic pipe of about 5 square miles, making this area the single most diverse mineral location in the world.
Over a dozen of the minerals identified here have never been found ANYWHERE else on the planet...and the discoveries haven't stopped. Maybe once per year, a geologist, or just an amateur rockhound, digs up something unusual that is eventually determined to be unique.
